Contaminated Water

GUIDANCE FOR ROWERS WHEN WATER QUALITY MAY BE POOR

There have been occasions this year when the quality (bacterial cleanliness) of various stretches of the River Thames has been in doubt. To be on the safe side, rowers are asked to always take precautions.

This applies here at Molesey Regatta too.

The recommendations below are from a Guidance Instruction issued by British Rowing, together with The Rivers Trust and River Action.

  • Clean all cuts and grazes thoroughly
  • Then ensure those cuts & grazes- any blisters too – are covered with waterproof dressings
  • Immediately wash or shower after any significant contact with water from the river
  • Take care not to swallow any river water that splashes close to your mouth
  • Wear suitable footwear when carrying, launching or landing a boat (particularly if that means wading into the water, which should not be the case here)
  • Clean boats and oars after outings, preferably with soapy water
  • If taking drinking water with you into the boat, use a bottle with a closed top.
  • If you should accidentally swallow river water or get a cut/graze wet, please see the onsite paramedic. And if you should feel unwell later, see your GP urgently.
